ORANGE SHIRT DAY | SEPTEMBER 30
Ā Orange Shirt Day grew out of Phyllis Webstadās story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day at residential school. She was among the hundreds of thousands of Indigenous children who attended Indian residential schools in Canada between the late 1800s and 1996 and who must now live with the devastating and lasting effects. While wearing orange today reminds us of the impact of residential schools still felt, itās also become a symbol of hope, ongoing healing and reconciliation and honours the experience of Indigenous Peoples.
WAYS TO SUPPORT ORANGE SHIRT DAY
Wear an orange shirt to show your support for those in the Native American community. Support those who did not escape the enduring impact of the trauma. Communities across the United States and Canada commemorate Orange Shirt Day by hosting memorials, candlelight vigils, and walks. Speakers offer a historical perspective to raise awareness.
We promise to donate to the "American Indian Child Resource Center" (https://aicrc.org) from the sale of orange shirts.Ā "The organization in Oakland, California focuses on providing support and education services for Native American children and families. They offer various programs related to education, mental health, and family support.
